Very good series, the best qualities of magic and fairytales combined. This would make a great movie trilogy. What a great author, thanks for the magic!

Palace of Silver: A Nissera Novel (The Nissera Chronicles) Hannah West This is third book in The Nissera Chronicles series. I felt a bit lost when I first started reading this book so I went to the public library to pick up copies of the first two installments. The first two books in the series are Kingdome of Ash and Briars. In the first two books we are introduced to Bristal a young kitchen maid that comes from a line of immortal sorcerers. Only two elicromancers (sorcerers) in Nissera. Tamarice is planningg to topple the dominions aristocracy and take command. Bristal and Brack protect the kingdoms and the monarchy. As the third book opens we see Nissera has peace. There are four queens: Valory, queen of Calgoran, Glisette and Kadri, queens from nearby monarchies. Ambrosine is the fourth queen. She vows to rule the human realm she is intended to shield. There is an rebellion by revolutionaries that loathe the elicromancer. Valory is missing, leaving Glisette and Kadri to fend for themselves. I strongly recommend reading the books in order. This is a YA fantasy novel filled with magic and intrigue.

I ordered this book to read to my children who are interested in fantasy. They are seven and nine and they found this book engaging, but I think the novel might be better suited for teenagers. There are previous books in the Nissera Chronicles and I would recommend that new readers begin with those. The first chapter of this novel contains enough explication so that you are brought up to date on the world building of this series, but it is presented in a way that could have been more dynamic. This book is written in the first person. It uses the same technique of the \’Game of Thrones\’ novels, and designates which chapter will be providing the point of view in the chapter title. I liked the world building of this novel, there is a lot going on and there is an intriguing magic that you learn about in a subtle and natural manner. The language is easy to read for the most part, although the names of the characters and places can be difficult to pronounce. I appreciated the inclusion of homosexual characters, although I wish the importance of sexuality had a greater impact on the plot. For me, it\’s not enough to simply have a girl kiss another girl and then have the matter be forgotten. I would like to read a discussion on how her society views her sexual preference and what effect intolerance has had on her life. I think homosexuality offers an important avenue for larger themes on social tolerance and the consequences of exclusion. This novel had the opportunity to engage those topics more than it did. If you\’re looking for an engaging fantasy with strong female characters, this is a good choice. It is a professional and creative work that is well-imagined and well-realized. \’Palace of Silver\’ didn\’t fully resonate with me, but I could see how this book could strike a chord with others.
