Imriel is not sure about what to choose in his life because he has seen two extremes in his life and he has to follow anyone of them. On one hand, the boy is the son of an evil woman named Melisande whose powers were so great that she once tried to rule over the entire world. Imriel’s real father was also a traitor so the boy has nothing special to tell about his real parents.

However, those who adopted the boy are hailed as heroes in society and this mended his fate to some extent. Now the boy is regarded as the Prince of the Blood and he is third in the line to the throne because of which he has gained some respect in the society. The conspiracies around him still exist and there are those men who still hate Imriel’s real mother from the core of their hearts.
Some think that the boy will act just like his mother if he is given complete control of the land. In a nutshell, the problems are just growing bigger for the young lad and he has to choose a side very quickly. While looking for a solution in life, Imriel comes to a land where Melisande is praised as a goddess and the people follow her like a true leader.

Imriel thinks that he has the chance to continue the legacy of his mother but this means destroying the world. Jacqueline Carey allows the story to go upside down on different occasions in this novel, it is something that the author didn’t practice in Kushiel’s Dart or Kushiel’s Chosen. At one time we get the hint that the boy is pure at heart while on the other there is a chance that he will take on where his mother ended. Simon Vance has given the main male character an excellent and clear voice during the narration of this novel and it makes everything easily understandable.
