When you have a murder and your prime suspect is dead, well that’s that, but not if Commissario Brunetti takes an interest and starts his own unofficial investigation. Was the old lady killed because no on, and a mean no one, liked her or is there more to the story? Ms. Leon keeps our interest in the story with her dialogue and plotline I highly recommend this book.

Donna Leon’s second Commissario Guido Brunetti Mystery, “Doctored Evidence,” sadly does not live up to the first volume. The books almost seem written by two different people. The pacing in the second book is ghastly with a story line that moves so slow as to cause the reader to lose interest. The characters introduced in this sequel are no way as intriguing as those in the initial book. The novel is full of philosophical meanderings that serve no purpose but to puff up the page count. Even Brunetti is not nearly as compelling as when first introduced. This book was a struggle to finish and doesn’t get a recommendation from me.

Doctored Evidence audiobook in series Commissario Brunetti Mysteries

What can you say ( it’s Donna Leon) that in its self is worth buying her books. I’ve read everything that she has written. My favourite Italian detective Guido Brunetti, since I’ve been to Venice, they are even more alive for me. My hope she will keep them coming. I will be first in line to buy the next one. I’ve even watched the film’s that have been produced on MHZ from her books. Great mystery stories in general. Bring on more please.

Audiobook Doctored Evidence by Donna Leonm

This is the second Donna Leon/Brunetti book I’ve read and enjoyed both very much. Her ability to fill out the various character’s . . . character is one of the things I like most. It’s like meeting them yourself. The descriptions of Venice and the people are always interesting and welcome. While reading the first book, I actually downloaded a map of the city to see the locations, not something I’m usually tempted to do when reading a ‘mystery’. I like that there is no contrived, questionable action like much of today’s so-called popular fiction. There are no supermen or superwomen here, just well rounded characters and believable, interesting plots. I just bought another of her books for my iPad. I’ve avoided Venice in past travels, too many tourists, but now I want to visit. Maybe in the off season. I’ll certainly read more of her books.

This is probably my favorite of Donna Leon’s Brunetti mysteries. The story had me hooked at the first sentence and kept me gripped all the way. While I always enjoy the descriptions of Paola’s culinary creations, they often distract from the main plot. Here they were more limited, and the mealtime discussions actually helped to further the plotline.

And by the way, as I will continue to state in any future reviews, Signorina Elletra Is absolutely adorable and a wonderful foil for the often dour Commisario.

Audio Doctored Evidence narrated by David Colacci

Others have documented the specifics of this tale very well in their reviews. However, to summarize, as with all the Commissario Brunetti mysteries by Donna Leon, this one takes place in Venice. An old woman was found murdered in her apartment. As the investigation unfolds, it’s readily apparent the victim was vastly disliked and if reports are accurate she almost seemed to have purposely aggravated people with her various behaviors.

At first, an immediately obvious guilty party emerges who has to be tracked down, but through twists and turns in the story (of which there are many) various of the characters emerge as the potential guilty party. Embedded in all of the books I have read by Leon are glimpses into life in Venice through some scenes within Brunetti’s family life. Are they typical? Only someone living there would know and not many families anywhere have a father in-law who is still considered royalty. Regardless, I find these aspects of her writing interesting and insightful.

Leon also seems to have a philosophical or political theme in each story. This one is no exception . It focuses on the philosophical in reviewing aspects of historic and current thinking per the proverbial Seven Deadly Sins. I found this book well worth reading but gave it a lower rating that I might otherwise have done because it dragged a bit in several places. I would have preferred less repetition to make the story faster paced as seems to define her writing in books more recently published.

This is one of Leon’s better books. Often the conclusion/solution is telegraphed well in advance of when it is revealed. This makes for an ending that is less that exciting. In this case, there is an element of surprise, in part, because the villain is introduced as a character late in the story. Leon writes well, and the protagonist, Guido, is both well developed, and a likeable person. HIs interaction with his wife is often a little strange, and strained. It is an interesting marriage, and I wonder after what couple she may, or may not, model it..
