In one of his last novellas Jim Harrison had one of his major characters say something to the effect that he wished he had a new Donna Leon to read. I feel exactly the same way. While this particular novel takes a while to get off the ground it is superb Brunetti, superb Donna Leon. For the past while she has released a new Brunetti in the early spring. Always something to look forward to. Have the primavera. Get the book. I will not go into any plot details.
Note to the publisher and editor: This book was edited poorly. On page 194, the same sentence is repeated a second time one sentence after it is first stated. On another page the word “to” is missing from a sentence. On page 277 there is a sentence that makes no sense:” Brunetti looked upon his works and despaired.” A series like this deserves much better editing.

The Temptation of Forgiveness audiobook in series Commissario Brunetti Mysteries
If you are already a dedicated Leon reader, you will find this newest addition to be deeper, more complex than even the best of the many volumes. Brunetti is getting older, seeing more clearly the challenges and accommodations many of his criminals and victims are forced to make. He moves closer to a “temptation of forgiveness” in this dazzling story. I liked him even better. So will you.
Alway look forward to Ms Leon’s books. This was a disappointment. Seems she wasn’t interested in details. Was the boy on drugs? Did the man die? Did the doctor go to jail. The whole did not unfold properly. Seems if she Just wanted to finish in a hurry. Going to think about buying another of her books. Very unhappy with this book and a waist of my money and time!

Audiobook The Temptation of Forgiveness by Donna Leonm
After having read every book in this series, I know the continuing characters well, and they, plus the very fine evocation of Venice, keep bringing me back. The patient, thoughtful, cultivated Commissario Brunetti; the vengeful and resourceful Signorina Elettra; Griffoni, who brings the wiles of Naples to the Venice police–all memorable. There is no bright line between good and evil here, but many shades of gray, shifting like the fogs that envelop the city.
Yet another mystery from Donna Leon. Once again, I have to warn you that you should not start reading this book on an empty stomach. The food described here is most tantalizing. The food that is prepared by Paola in the Brunetti home as well as the snacks that Commissario Guido Brunetti picks up during the day at informal meetings all sound delicious.
I, once again have to apologize for masking a portion of the map of Venice on the inside front cover with the Book Crossing label. That same map is repeated on the inside back cover and was most important to my reading of this book and may also help to keep you informed of the locations involved in this story.
Not only food, but a great description of the city of Venice and the relationships between the Brunetti family and with the staff of the Questura are delightful characteristics of all of the Leon books.

Audio The Temptation of Forgiveness narrated by David Colacci
While the actual plot, as opposed to a red-herring side trip, takes a while to get started, the writing and the characters carry the reader along until then, enjoying the scenery, Brunetti’s warmth and humor, and his relationships. This novel has the charm of Leon’s other Brunetti novels, whether the Commissario is mentally jousting with his colleagues, relating his reading of the classics to his present-day conundrums, or wrestling with moral dilemmas. Leon writes beautifully and, as I read on Kindle, I can’t help highlighting some of her better descriptions and observations. As usual, the book points out a challenging ethical/legal problem, one pitting the state’s laws against the human tragedies the laws fail to consider. This is a lovely book to savor.

A very disappointing effort – not up to the Donna’s usual high standard. The plot is weak ,does not command enough interest, and the ending is totally unsatisfactory. The relationships between the main characters are thrown up in the air (and land flatly), with the result the interactions are changed from previous books, with detrimental effect. Brunetti comes across as weak and not confident! Is the author running out of puff?
I found it very hard to decide on how many stars to give this, the 28 th “Brunetti” Donna Leon novel. I have literally read them all from “Death at La Feniece” onwards, and sadly this latest21 is probably the weakest of them all. That is not to say I didn’t enjoy any of it. I did! I love the gentle pace, and all the characters are here – Patta/Griffoni/Scarpa/Vianello/ and the family, and their meals. Brunetti’s walks around all the landmarks of Venice (I constantly refer to the map to remind me where he is – every map for each book has some different relevant places from the particular novel). But here’s the problem – there is nothing new, nothing much happens – no murders, no violence. Look back to the first few novels – tough, with twisting plots and threat and, yes, violence, tho not gory. Just read “AQUA ALTA” and hopefully you will see what I mean. MINOR SPOILER – What spoiled this book completely was the ending. – Some will disagree – fine- that’s life -but I can’t help thinking Donna Leon has run out of steam, and maybe, just maybe, she should put Brunetti to bed. If she does I would miss him terribly, but it could just be the sensible thing to do. To repeat myself a bit – If you want to really get into “Brunetti do start with “Feniece” and work through them – The first dozen or so are good solid novels, and well worth a read.
