I’ve read and listened to a lot of holocaust memoirs but this one was hard to stop listening to. I had heard the story on TV about this escape but the detail the book goes into is so much better. At first I wasn’t crazy about the narrator but as time went in I realized he was perfect for the story. I highly recommend this true story about one of the very few successful escapes from Auschwitz concentration camp! The detail and depth of the writing is incredible. For example: “Wearily, he held out his hand. Immediately, a soldier handed him a short truncheon. The two soldiers who had been standing behind me forced me back onto a table, and then he went to work on my face with an efficiency that made the earlier efforts of his subordinates seem amateurish, wasteful. The blows sliced into my face short, savage blows that fell with the monotonous regularity of the questions. Names and addresses trickled to the tip of my tongue only to be sent scurrying back again by some force in my mind that I did not know existed. \”You\’re a spy! Who are your friends? Where do they live?\”……. I couldn’t stop listening. Yes, its a long book but, you dont want it to end. 5 people found this helpful

The story is fascinating, a bit redundant. I now see why the Jewish people went without more resistance. The deception was so great. I find human behavior appalling. 1 person found this helpful

Audiobook I Escaped from Auschwitz by Alan Bestic Nikola Zimring – editor Robin Vrba – editor Rudolf Vrba Sir Martin Gilbert – foreword
An in depth recounting of an incredible escape from Auschwitz. I have read many accounts of this escape but never all the details of it. Rather incredible how it was done even more incredible that these two men were not recaptured. They made it and,as they intended, warned the Jewish community of Hungary of their forth coming fate at the hands of the Nazis. This begs the question. Why, after being warned and given proof, were so many Hungarian Jews murdered in the gas chambers of Auschwitz? I guess that is a story for another book. This is an excellent book, very informative, easy to listen to and extremely well narrated. My only problem with the narration was minor and that was the volume of the narrator. I wish he had spoken a bit louder. Had to listen with headphones which I do not like to do but, as I said, that was very minor. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the Holocaust or World War Two. 1 person found this helpful

Audio I Escaped from Auschwitz narrated by Steven Jay Cohen
I loved the story and wished I had just read the book myself. I think I would have enjoyed it more. The narrator started and stopped speaking in weird places and it made it very hard to follow at times. Like trailing off in mid sentence and rolling one sentence into the other where a pause would normally be. The story however was extremely interesting and heartfelt. It’s worth a listen if that’s your preferred method. If not, than I encourage you to grab the book. I will be purchasing it and reading again as I really did enjoy the true life story of a man who escaped and survived the unsurvivable.
