I really like the Night Man series featuring Nate from the Jonathan Quinn series. This is the third book in the series of standalone books. I prefer listening in order but it is not necessary. I would suggest listening to book one first for some background but again that is subjective. In the Quinn books Nate plays second fiddle to his boss. Always a good read but so much hidden potential. This series gives Battles the arena to develop Nate’s character to his full potential.
Nate is a very methodical man. He finds wrongs and tries to make them right. Usually when he find someone slightly shady there’s more going on behind the scenes that make the little wrongs more like an iceberg. What’s below the surface is immense. His traps are elaborate and well thought out. It’s great listening to how the bad guy gets tricked into walking right in to a perfectly orchestrated trap that takes almost a whole book to lay out

Mercy audiobook series The Night Man Chronicles
I see that Shelley has already reviewed MERCY which is Book 3 in The Night Man Chronicles series by Brett Battles. I agree with everything in her review so I will add to it rather than repeating it.
Liz: Nate, originally the helper of Jonathan Quinn and now Quinn’s partner, met and fell in love with Quinn’s sister Liz midway in the Quinn series. Liz was later killed during an operation is Europe.Nate had a very difficult time accepting Liz’s death. Even now, several years later, Liz still talks to him. He realizes it’s all in his mind but her advice/pleadings to him are unerring in their accuracy. All three of the books in this series result from Nate following Liz’s advice.
Jar: Jar is a 22 year old Asian woman who is on the autism spectrum. She was introduced in recent novels in the Quinn series and became a full team member in The Vanished. She first appeared in the Night Man series in Book 2.. She is a genius with computers and language both of which she taught herself. She now lives with Nate. Their relationship is non-sexual. Jar takes everything literally and she cannot tolerate being touched. After living with Nate for a year she has made progress in both areas.
Nate: In MERCY Nate clearly wants to move on from long dead girlfriend Liz and establish a new girlfriend relationship with Jar.

Audiobook Mercy by Brett Battles
Great author. Great narrator. I listen to fiction to get away from everyone’s opinion. Brett voices his multiple times in the first few hours. I even agree with him, but get tired of hearing it. I’m not finishing this book and will return it.
I love Brett Battles’ books, and I have enjoyed the first 2 Night Man Chronicles, but as much as I wanted to like this book, I didn’t. The repeated reminders of the pandemic were annoying, and the storyline was boring. This was so disappointing since I’ve waited for this book to come out on Audible.

Audio Mercy narrated by Zach Villa
One of the best series character storyline newish series. Zack Villa embodies Nate breathing life into the character; who is, in every respect, a modern day hero battling evil in a moral way that is truly inspiring and admirable. Can’t wait to hear the further adventures of the Nate, and Jar team as well as when they rejoin their Quinn compatriots battling evil. Many thanks to Brett Battles for his brilliant storylines and characters; so gifted!

Free audio Mercy – in the audio player below
I have enjoyed all of Brett Battles’ books until this then. He has allowed what is apparently his fear and dislike of people who disagreed with him on mask effectiveness to becomes the main charachter of this book.
The book would be moving along at a good clip when Nate would encounter or see someone who was not wearing a mask. At the point the novel comes to a screeching halt while Nate has to either give a lecture out loud to the person or think negative thoughts about them and their intelligence. Nate, because he wears a mask everywhere, obviously thinks he is superior to anyone who doesnt’t. Since Nate is the main character it is not hard to make the leap that the author is pushing his beliefs out to the reading/purchasing public through Nate.
I made it about halfway through the book when I just became tired of the COVID preaching and scolding and stopped reading. This is the first time I have ever done that with a Battles novel.
