Though I consider myself a history lover, I was totally unaware of the events of the Spanish revolution and it\’s association with the events leading up to WW II. Though many events are sad and heartbreaking, it also reminds of the strength of the human will to overcome and succeed. Glad I read it

This book was told in a way that you could enjoy watching the story unfold while learning about the Spanish Civil War & Franco\’s fascist army while also learning about how the Spanish children felt about being in Mexico. Without giving too much away, it was ironic that the Spaniards did not trust or like the Priests & the Catholic Church. The very thing Spain imported to the Americas is the thing that Spaniards trusted the least. A very intriguing story from beginning to end.

This novel tells a story about the first war of the twentieth-century. We keep repeating the same mistakes and the same characters keep making their appearances. Wars are for the powerful and rich whom benefit the most. While the people they lead become collateral damage as those that have begin dehumanizing them and gloat and relish in their crimes against humanity

The over all story was very interesting and heart breaking revolving around one boy and his family struggle to survive. That being said it was very difficult to read with the repeated editing errors. With a little help this book could be a wonderful read.

The opening lines of Chapter 28 says it all, \”One lesson we learn as adults is that, if things are going poorly, they can always get worse.\” And, of course, things just got worse and worse. I actually like books about tragedies, especially TRUE stories. But I found this one over the top, so much so that towards the end I laughed aloud at the absurdity of it all. About half way through I starting skimming a lot of the pointless narrative so I could get it over with and move on to something a little less depressing.
