UPDATE: Well after trolling Diana Rowland’s FB page I saw this

Q: “Will there be another white trash zombie book or was this the end?”

A: There will… but I have another project I want to work on first, so it may be a couple of years before I can get back to Angel.

So it is NOT the end it would appear.

———————————————————————————

This was a GREAT story and once again we see Angel trying to be all things to all people. This Angel is a far cry from the one we met in book 1 and has started to make herself into a real example of how to remake yourself into a better person …. even if she is kinda dead.

We have great moments from “The Great Frog Escape” to actual “Save The World” plots and I loved them all and the way she uses all her characters and you feel like you know them all.

The mix of humor and serious plots make these books exceptional when you consider the heroes/heroines in these books are mostly zombies (the brain eating is kept to a minimum in this book).

I am concerned that this has all the markings of a final book in the series, seems all loose ends are tied up and some HEA along the way for more than 1 of the characters but if it is then we went out with a exceptional book, 5 Stars and hope to see more of Angel.

Angel Crawford has completely recovered from her limbs rotting off. She’s good as new and ready to return to her normal life. Unfortunately, her first day has a corpse rising as a mindless shambler zombie and attacking her and her coworkers. It doesn’t take them long to discover that Angel’s damaged parasite spread previously to some alligators who further spread the shambler strain. Now, it’s approaching pandemic levels and the CDC is involved. Can Angel, Dr. Nikas, and the odious Kristi Charish come up with a cure before it’s too late?

This is the sixth installment of the White Trash Zombie series and it’s still going strong. Angel is still paying for her slip back into addiction from the last book although she is healed from its physical aspects. Although she would work hard to help regardless of the source, this shambler strain of the parasite is especially personal because it originated from her. She understandably feels responsible and guilty for those afflicted who are rapidly dying. Her relationship with Nick is at a standstill due to him witnessing her rotting away. Both are awkward and Angel doesn’t want to make their work relationship weird. In school, she’s taking classes at the local community college, but struggles with schoolwork and feels pretty pessimistic about the whole thing. By the end of the book, Angel goes through a significant mental transformation that I’m excited to see in future books.

This new shambler parasite seems to be even more contagious than the regular one. People lose their cognitive abilities and only attack other people or animals. If the disease goes on for too long, the afflicted simply die. Large groups of people turn at once and some things just don’t add up. The damaged parasite came from the mindless shambler Angel infected in the last installment and infected some alligators in the river. The zombie alligators seem too over the top for the series, but I liked the more silly touch. In addition to the alligators, mosquitos may be responsible for the disease spreading. Since the parasite is historically not able to live in animals, this is all new territory. It also doesn’t help that Saberton seems to be a step ahead of them every step of the way.

One of the things I love about this series is that something new is always discovered or learned about the zombie parasite. Mature zombies with the ability to change their appearance aren’t new, but how they are created is discovered. Usually, it just happens over time to a small percentage of zombies. Another mature zombie can force the change, which Kang did to Pietro (they have an interesting history together), but the side effects can be catastrophic. Pietro became enraged for a long time and explains his almost psychopathic behavior. Just in this book, he suggests turning Charish against her will and basically enslaving her without any reservations. Thankfully, Dr. Nikas refuses to cross some lines and keeps him in sane territory.

White Trash Zombie Unchained continues this charming series with dynamic stories, memorable characters, mystery, and a sweet romance. I hope this series is not even close to stopping because I look forward to these books every year. Highly recommended and well written. In the meantime, I plan to read Diana Rowland’s other paranormal series to make the wait less painful.

Audiobook White Trash Zombie Unchained (White Trash Zombie #6) by Diana Rowland

Angel Crawford is at it again – with alligators LITERALLY on her ass!! I’m in awe of Diana Rowland’s ability to make these characters so engaging. The tightness of each scene and the depth of each and every character give us a world that is completely believable, terrifying, twisted-funny and engaging.

If this is the end of the series, which I hope it isn’t (as does my nearly 70 year old mother), Diana Rowland did it beautifully – a “happily ever after” in a zombie apocalypse (sorta) is not easily accplished.

Reward yourself – read this series and you will be glad you did!

Audio White Trash Zombie Unchained (White Trash Zombie #6) narrated by Allison McLemore

The installment seems to wrap up all the loose ends of people in the wrong places and possibly doing the wrong things. There are consequences to Angel feeding one of her attackers from the last book, to the swamp. Now the alligators seem to be spreading some sort of mutated zombie plague. Angel and company get right on it but… Saberton seems to be dogging their every step and Christie is trying to poke her nose into it too. Along with this, Angel is trying to pass her college classes and an FBI agent is asking about town for her. What’s a girl got to do to get a break other than save the town and her friends once again?

I really liked this one and it pretty much wraps up the series, leaving people in the right places for zombies to continue to survive. I hope she will write more and continue in some plot line but it could easily be left here.

Oh, I got the Audible version and I love the narrator, has the country twang down.

I love Angel she is fun, she is cool, she is smart, she is capable, she is total badass She is the protagonist with the most character growth I ever encountered. And she eats brains! I even cosplayed the book cover on the second volume. I dont know if Rowland plans to continue the series, but Zombie Unchained felt like a good and satisfactory conclusion. Many side characters reached better stable places, got what they wanted all along and earned their sweet HEAs; most sub-plots were wrapped up, question answered and the future felt positively outlined.
The book had very cozy feeling, without being overly kitsch.
The mystery was awesome, with lots of fun action and cool twists. Glad we got read of the big bad of the series. And I liked how it was done, and how it was used.
In previous books the romantic sub-plot always felt strained, I was glad how sweet and realistic the romance was in this one. Angel ended with the best choice of them all.
I will definitely read more white trash zombie, if the series will continue.
