Mick Oberon is fiiling the gap in my life left by Harry Dresden. That said, this book, the 3rd in the series wasn’t quite as good as the previous ones. I like my Mick Oberon sharp, well tuned, edgy, and sarcastic. This time things seemed a little off, perhaps a bit forced. Things were a bit mushy, and the plot a bit thickly orchestrated but without the strong foundation it really needed. There were some gaps that had to be filled in. Still a good read, but I’m hoping Mick finds his true mojo again in book 4 (there had better be a book 4).

I have thoroughly enjoyed all three books in this series, and hope there will be more. Every book in the series, including this one, has had a thoroughly interesting plot and well-developed characters. I enjoy fantasy and mysteries and love hard-boiled private eye stories. This book, this series, has all of that. Absolutely recommend.

Audiobook Dead to Rites (Mick Oberon #3) by Ari Marmell
I like this kind of book, urban fantasy with magic and creatures, etc. The detective bit has been done many times but the setting is charming, 1930s Chicago. Lots of mov activity and quaint language.
This book felt like it lacked some of the punch of the previous entries in the series, probably because it felt like a setup to the next book(s) and because the side characters were less compelling (although I did like Fedora)

I loved the first 2 stories in this series. Set in Chicago in the 1930’s this series revolves around a Fae PI. I know, we have seen supernatural PI’s before. The is handled very well by the author, who has done his homework on 1930’s jargon and culture.
Best to read the first two in the series before reading this book.

I can’t wait for #4! Ari has done a great job of weaving together fantasy and Noir in 1930’s Chicago. One thing a lot of Noir misses is how complex a city Chicago was (and still is) filled with immigrants and people of all kinds. Ari extends this theme with immigrants from Fae. This is a tricky thing, weaving Faerie magic and tommy guns.
